Religious & Pilgrimage Tour Jogja
Visit sacred and historic places in Yogyakarta
Jogja is unique — within a 50-kilometer radius, you can visit the largest Buddhist monument in the world, the most magnificent Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, a centuries-old Sultanate mosque, and a Marian grotto visited by thousands of Catholic pilgrims. Few cities anywhere possess this depth of spiritual diversity.
For pilgrim groups visiting the royal tombs of Mataram kings at Imogiri, there is something important to know: the tombs are only open on specific days, namely Senin Kliwon and Jumat Kliwon in the Javanese calendar (roughly twice a month). Our drivers know this schedule by heart and will remind you before you book. At Imogiri, there are 345 steps to climb — for groups with elderly members, we recommend arriving in the morning before it gets hot and bringing plenty of water.
What makes religious tourism in Jogja fascinating: the Gedhe Kauman Mosque has been in active daily use for congregational prayers since the era of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. The four Pathok Negoro Mosques at the city's four compass points each carry their own spiritual story — few tourists know about them. And for those interested in interfaith sites, Bukit Rhema (the so-called "Chicken Church") near Borobudur was actually built as a prayer house for all religions, set against a reverent mountain backdrop.
Recommended Itinerary
Day 1: City Pilgrimage
Morning at Gedhe Kauman Mosque — you can perform the Dhuha prayer there, the mosque is cool and serene. Then walk to the Kraton (5 minutes) to see the Sultanate's spiritual heritage. After Dzuhur prayer, drive to Imogiri Royal Cemetery (30 minutes south) — prepare for 345 steps, bring water. Make sure your visit day matches the opening schedule. Return to the city in the afternoon, stopping at one of the Pathok Negoro Mosques (Ploso Kuning or Mlangi are the most accessible).
Day 2: Sacred Temples
Depart at 6 AM for Borobudur — arrive early for a more contemplative atmosphere, before the tourist crowds. The wall reliefs tell the story of the Buddha's spiritual journey — allow 2-3 hours to truly absorb the narrative. Continue to Mendut Temple (10 minutes, its Buddha statue is beautiful for a moment of quiet meditation). Midday to Prambanan — a Hindu temple whose Ramayana reliefs are awe-inspiring. If time and energy permit, Bukit Rhema (Chicken Church) is 20 minutes from Borobudur — the view is deeply peaceful.

Important Tips
The Imogiri Cemetery opening schedule follows the Javanese calendar: Senin Kliwon and Jumat Kliwon (roughly twice a month). Check 'Javanese calendar 2026' online before setting your travel date. Our drivers can also help confirm the schedule.
Dress modestly: for mosques and tombs, wear clothes that cover appropriately (for non-Muslims, cover-up fabric is available on-site). At temples, modest clothing is appreciated though not required. Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.
For Catholic visitors: Sendangsono (Marian Grotto) can be combined with the Borobudur route since they are in the same Magelang direction. Visit in the morning before heading to Borobudur — the site is shaded and serene.
