Budget Jogja for Backpackers

Explore Jogja on a budget without missing out

A backpacker from Bandung once told us he spent 3 days in Jogja for a total of IDR 400,000 — including food, entrance fees, and transport. How? He split an Avanza rental with 4 people from the same hostel, ate at angkringan street stalls (IDR 5,000-10,000 per serving), and slept in a Sosrowijayan dorm for IDR 60,000/night. Jogja really is a budget traveler's paradise.

On transport, here is what backpackers often miscalculate: a ride-hailing trip from Malioboro to Borobudur is IDR 80,000+ one way. Add Prambanan, the beach, Merapi — you could easily spend IDR 300,000/day on ride-hailing alone. Meanwhile, an Avanza rental for the whole day is just IDR 250,000. Split five ways? IDR 50,000 per person for a full day including driver and fuel. No figuring out routes, no exhaustion from driving, and you can nap in the car between destinations.

The veteran Jogja backpacker trick: spend day one walking around the city (Malioboro, Kraton, Taman Sari — all walkable, tickets under IDR 15,000). Then rent a shared car on day two for the distant destinations: Borobudur, Prambanan, or the south coast. This way, you only need one day of car rental and the rest is essentially free.

Today, rent a shared Avanza — depart at 7 AM. Prambanan first (IDR 50,000 domestic ticket, 2 hours is enough). Important Tips

Find share partners on Facebook groups like 'Backpacker Jogja' or 'Jogja Trip Bareng' — almost every week someone is looking for car rental partners. Or ask at your hostel, there is usually someone interested.

Visit Tuesday through Thursday if possible. Accommodation can be 30-50% cheaper than weekends, and attractions are quieter. Angkringan and warung prices are the same every day, so there is no downside.

Cheapest eats: angkringan street stalls. Nasi kucing rice wraps IDR 3,000, fried snacks IDR 1,000-2,000, tea/coffee IDR 3,000. An IDR 15,000 budget fills you up. The best ones: Angkringan Lik Man (near Tugu Station) or the row of angkringan along Jl. Wongsodirjan.
