Short but memorable vacation in Yogyakarta
Most of our guests from Jakarta only have Saturday and Sunday. They usually say: "Just Borobudur and Malioboro is fine." But honestly, two days can go much further than that. We have planned dozens of 2D1N trips, and the pattern is well-tested — day one for temples and the city, day two for nature or the coast. You go home with real stories, not just a single Borobudur selfie.
The key is your pickup time. If you take an early morning flight from Jakarta (landing at 8 AM), you can start the tour by 9. That means Borobudur before noon — still quiet, not yet scorching. Afternoon, explore the Kraton and Taman Sari water palace. Evening, stroll Malioboro and hunt for gudeg. Day two is your choice: Merapi jeep adventure or a laid-back south coast beach day? Both work, but do not try to combine them — they are in opposite directions.
Cost-wise, an Avanza for 2 days is just IDR 500,000. Split four ways, that is IDR 125,000 per person for transport. Add a budget hotel at IDR 250k/night and warung meals, and your entire Jogja weekend can come in under IDR 500k per person. Cheaper than a Jakarta staycation, and far more memorable.
Recommended Itinerary
Day 1: Temples & City
Pickup at 7-8 AM from the airport or hotel. Head straight to Borobudur — about 1.5 hours drive, arriving while it is still cool and uncrowded. Explore for 2-3 hours, then lunch at a warung near the temple (nasi gudeg or soto, IDR 15-25k). Back to the city, stop at the Kraton (closes at 2 PM, so timing matters) and Taman Sari water palace. Afternoon hotel check-in, then walk to Malioboro in the evening — be sure to try the angkringan stalls at the north end, their kopi joss is legendary.
Day 2: Nature & Souvenirs
Option A: Merapi Lava Tour departing at 8 AM, a 1.5-hour jeep ride through the aftermath of the 2010 eruption — exciting with dramatic photo ops. Or Option B: head to Indrayanti Beach (1.5 hours south), relax until midday. Afternoon, stop at Mangunan Pine Forest if time allows (same direction from the beach). Return to the city by 2-3 PM, pick up bakpia and batik souvenirs, then drop-off at the airport or Tugu train station.

Important Tips
Take the earliest flight from Jakarta (usually 5-6 AM), landing at 7-8 AM. That gives you almost a full first day. An afternoon flight wastes half your trip.
A hotel near Malioboro is worth it for 1 night since you can walk around in the evening without needing a car. Prawirotaman works too, but you will need a ride to Malioboro.
If you only have 2 days and must pick one temple: Borobudur. Prambanan is beautiful, but Borobudur is once-in-a-lifetime. If you have been to Borobudur before, then go with Prambanan + Ratu Boko.
