Wonosobo is usually not the final destination — most people come here as a base camp before climbing up to Dieng. And that is a smart choice. This town sits at 700-800 meters altitude, the air is already cool (15-22 degrees Celsius), and from here it is just 30 minutes up to Dieng. It is much better to stay overnight in Wonosobo and leave for Dieng at dawn for sunrise, rather than forcing a 4-hour drive from Jogja to Dieng in the dark.

The Jogja-to-Wonosobo drive is about 100 km, 3 hours via Magelang. The route: Jl. Magelang north, past Muntilan, entering mountain roads after Magelang city, then continuing uphill to Wonosobo. The second half of the journey is fairly winding and steep, but the terraced rice fields and mountain panoramas along the way make it far from boring.
