The closest beach to Jogja is Parangtritis — 27 km straight south on Jl. Parangtritis, about 40-50 minutes. The road is smooth and flat with no significant hills until you approach the coast. It is the most accessible beach and the best choice for an afternoon sunset visit.

But if you are looking for white sand beaches with clear water, your destination is the Gunungkidul beach strip to the southeast: Indrayanti, Sundak, Krakal, Kukup, Timang, and Jogan. From Jogja, the drive to Gunungkidul is 60-90 minutes depending on which beach — via Jl. Wonosari which winds up and down through dramatic karst hills.
