There are two ways to get from Jogja to Semarang, and each has its advantages. The toll road route (via Solo-Semarang) takes about 3 hours, flat and fast, ideal if you are in a hurry or need to arrive for a meeting. The Magelang-Ambarawa route takes 3.5-4 hours, slower but passes through mountain scenery, terraced rice fields, and offers the chance to stop at the Ambarawa Railway Museum or agrotourism spots in Bandungan.

Important Tips
If you are not in a rush, take the Magelang route and stop at the Ambarawa Railway Museum (ticket IDR 10,000). From there to Semarang is just 1 more hour through a scenic downhill drive.
Have an e-toll card or cash ready. The Jogja-Solo-Semarang toll route costs around IDR 60,000-80,000 total. Rest areas are available at several points for breaks and food.
Semarang is hot and humid — very different from Jogja. If continuing to Karimunjawa from Semarang, boats from Tanjung Emas Port depart in the morning.
