Jogja Tour Routes

Efficient itineraries so your Jogja trip is not wasted in traffic

1-Day Route: Jogja City Tour

Estimated: 10-12 hours | Vehicle: Avanza or Calya is sufficient

Start at 08:00 from your hotel, head straight to Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton) — arrive before 09:00 when it is still quiet and you can catch traditional dance rehearsals at the pendopo. From the Keraton, walk to Taman Sari Water Palace (just 500 meters south), spend about an hour. Then the driver picks you up at Taman Sari parking and heads to Malioboro — park at Malioboro Mall or Abu Bakar Ali parking building since the main street is pedestrian-only.

Lunch options abound on Malioboro: gudeg Yu Djum inside the mall, or for something more authentic, try the angkringan food stalls on Jl. Sosrowijayan (just north of Malioboro). After eating and shopping, depart around 14:00 for Prambanan via Jl. Solo — a 30-40 minute drive from Malioboro. Avoid the Ring Road if it is past 15:00 as traffic builds up. Explore Prambanan for 1.5-2 hours, then if you still have energy, continue to Ratu Boko just 3 km uphill for sunset. Return to hotel around 18:00-18:30.

1-Day Route: Borobudur + Prambanan

Estimated: 12 hours | Vehicle: Avanza or Innova

This is a packed route, so you must start early. Leave at 05:00, take Jl. Magelang northbound — the drive to Borobudur takes about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic. For Borobudur sunrise, depart at 04:00 and buy a separate sunrise ticket (more expensive but worth it during dry season). Explore Borobudur for 2-3 hours, then lunch in Magelang — try Soto Gebrak near Magelang town square.

From Magelang to Prambanan takes 1.5-2 hours via Jl. Magelang-Yogya connecting to Jl. Solo. Arrive at Prambanan around 13:30-14:00, explore for 2 hours. If the weather is clear and you have energy left, go up to Ratu Boko for sunset at 16:30. Return to Jogja via Jl. Solo, arriving at hotel around 18:00-19:00.

2-Day Route: Complete Jogja

Vehicle: Innova or Avanza

Day 1 — Borobudur + City Tour: Morning trip to Borobudur (sunrise if you wish). Lunch in Magelang, then back to Jogja via Jl. Magelang. Afternoon at Malioboro for shopping and street food. Evening at Alun-Alun Kidul (South Square) to see the lights and try walking between two banyan trees blindfolded — a fun local tradition.

Day 2 — Prambanan + Gunungkidul: Morning at Prambanan (opens at 06:00, arrive early for fewer crowds). Continue to HeHa Sky View via Jl. Wonosari — great viewpoint for photos, spend about an hour. Then descend to Indrayanti Beach, roughly 45 minutes from HeHa. Seafood lunch at beachside stalls (grilled fish from IDR 35,000). Afternoon option: Bukit Parangendog or head back to Jogja via Jl. Wonosari — the return takes 1.5 hours, but after 17:00 expect traffic around the Piyungan area.

3-Day Route: Ultimate Jogja

Vehicle: Innova (highly recommended for comfort)

Day 1 — Cultural Heritage: Keraton in the morning, walk to Taman Sari, lunch in Prawirotaman (this area has great cafes and restaurants), Malioboro in the afternoon, then Prambanan, closing with Ratu Boko sunset.

Day 2 — Borobudur + Merapi: Borobudur sunrise (depart at 04:00), then to Kaliurang for the Merapi Lava Tour by jeep — the drive from Borobudur to Kaliurang takes about 2 hours via Muntilan. The Lava Tour usually lasts 1.5-2 hours, stopping at Museum Sisa Hartaku and the Kaliadem bunker. Afternoon return to Jogja, evening street food along Jl. Kaliurang which has many angkringan stalls.

Day 3 — South Coast + Mangunan: Morning departure for the beach — Parangtritis for the iconic one, Indrayanti for clean sand and calm waters. Take Jl. Parangtritis from Bantul; the road is good but Sunday mornings can be busy with motorbikes. After the beach, drive up to Mangunan Pine Forest (30 minutes from Parangtritis) for photos among the pine trees. Continue to Kebun Buah Mangunan for sunset — the view overlooks the Oya River and rolling hills, one of the best sunset spots in Jogja.

Tips for Efficient Routes

The key principle: group destinations by direction. Borobudur and Merapi are both to the north, so do not combine them with the south coast beaches on the same day — you will spend 3-4 hours just traveling. Plan circular routes instead of going back to your hotel at midday. Eat lunch at roadside warungs along the route, not back in the city center. And most importantly: start early, around 05:00-06:00. Besides avoiding traffic and heat, tourist spots are much quieter and more pleasant in the morning.
