Transport — The Biggest Cost Component
Transport is typically the largest chunk of your Jogja travel budget, especially if your destinations are spread out. Here are the daily car rental price ranges:
- City car self-drive (Calya/Sigra): IDR 200,000-250,000/day — cheapest but fuel is on you, so add roughly IDR 50,000-80,000/day for petrol if touring within the city
- Avanza + driver + fuel: IDR 250,000-350,000/day — the most popular choice, all-inclusive for the Jogja area
- Innova + driver + fuel: IDR 400,000-500,000/day — worth it for long trips to Borobudur or Dieng
- Hiace + driver + fuel: IDR 1,200,000-1,500,000/day — split among 10-15 people that is only IDR 100,000-150,000 per person, very economical for groups
Entrance Tickets
The good news is that tourist attraction tickets in Jogja are cheap compared to Bali or Jakarta. But one thing to note: foreign tourist (WNA) tickets are significantly more expensive, especially for temples.
- Borobudur: IDR 50,000 (domestic) / $25 (foreign) — sunrise package is separate and costs more
- Prambanan: IDR 50,000 (domestic) / $25 (foreign)
- Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton): IDR 15,000 — cheap and absolutely worth it
- Taman Sari Water Palace: IDR 15,000
- Parangtritis Beach: IDR 10,000 (entrance fee + parking separately IDR 5,000)
- Indrayanti Beach: IDR 10,000
- Merapi Lava Tour: IDR 450,000/jeep for 4-5 people — so IDR 90,000-112,000 per person when split
- Goa Pindul: IDR 35,000-50,000/person including tube, life jacket, and guide
- HeHa Sky View: IDR 25,000-30,000 including parking
Food — Jogja Is Cheap Eating Paradise
This is one reason people love visiting Jogja: great food without breaking the bank. At an angkringan (Jogja's signature sidewalk food stall), you can have nasi kucing (small rice portions), fried snacks, and wedang jahe ginger drink for just IDR 10,000-15,000 per person. Regular warungs serving gudeg, fried chicken, or soto run about IDR 15,000-25,000. More comfortable local restaurants like Bale Raos or House of Raminten cost IDR 30,000-50,000 per person. Mid-range restaurants with nice ambiance, budget IDR 50,000-100,000. Fine dining at 5-star hotels starts at IDR 100,000-300,000 per person.
Accommodation — From IDR 50,000 to Millions
Jogja has an extremely wide range of accommodation. Hostels and backpacker guesthouses start at IDR 50,000-150,000/night — the Prawirotaman and Sosrowijayan areas have the most options in this range. Budget hotels at IDR 150,000-350,000/night are spread across the city, many including breakfast. 3-star hotels at IDR 350,000-700,000 are very comfortable with swimming pools and central locations. 4-5 star hotels range from IDR 700,000 to IDR 2,000,000+/night — Malioboro and surrounding areas are the most popular location.
