Parking Rates at Tourist Spots
Parking at tourist spots in Jogja is relatively cheap, but there are a few things to know. At Borobudur, car parking is IDR 10,000-20,000 and located quite far from the entrance — be prepared to walk 10-15 minutes or take an andong (horse carriage) for IDR 20,000 one way. At Prambanan it is closer, parking IDR 5,000-10,000 with direct walking access to the ticket counter.
Malioboro is the most confusing area for parking because the main street is now a pedestrian zone. Your best options are Malioboro Mall parking (IDR 5,000-10,000, direct access to Malioboro street) or the Abu Bakar Ali parking building at the north end. Do not try to park on small streets around Malioboro — many turn out to be illegal parking zones and you could get fined or towed.
For beaches, parking is generally IDR 5,000-10,000 with spacious parking areas. HeHa Sky View has free parking included in the entrance ticket.
Difficult Parking Areas
Malioboro is number one, no question. Do not expect to park in front of any shop — there is no such option. Beyond that, Prawirotaman, the popular backpacker and cafe area, has narrow streets with limited parking. If you arrive in the afternoon or evening, expect to spend 10-15 minutes finding a spot. The Keraton and Taman Sari area also has tiny narrow alleys — if you are in an Innova or Hiace, park on the nearest main road (Jl. Ngasem or Jl. Taman) and walk 5 minutes in.
General tip: on weekends and national holidays, arrive before 09:00 at popular tourist spots. After that, parking fills up and you will be forced to park far away or circle around looking for a space.
Why Renting With a Driver Makes Parking a Non-Issue
This is one of the most practical reasons to choose chauffeur rental. The driver drops you off right at the tourist entrance, then finds parking and waits in the car. When you are done, just WhatsApp the driver and he picks you up at the same spot. You waste no time finding parking, no need to carry parking tickets, and no need to remember where the car is parked. At places like Borobudur where parking is far from the entrance, this can save 20-30 minutes per visit.
