The most iconic sunrise photo in all of Central Java is taken from here: Borobudur Temple's silhouette emerging from a sea of mist, flanked by the majestic Mount Merapi and Merbabu behind it. Punthuk Setumbu — a simple hill near Borobudur that produces anything but a simple view.
Tickets IDR 30,000 (far cheaper than Sunrise Borobudur at $45 for foreigners). Depart Jogja at 03:30, arrive 04:30, climb stairs 15 minutes to the top, and wait for the magic at 05:30-06:00. Bring a thick jacket — temperatures can be 14-16°C with strong wind at the peak.

How to Get There
42 km from Jogja, near Borobudur — 1-1.5 hours. The final road to the hill is narrow and dark (departing at 03:30). Our drivers know this route well. After sunrise, continue to VW Safari or head straight to Borobudur.

Leave Jogja at 03:30, arrive 04:30, climb stairs 15 minutes. Use your phone flashlight. Front spots are limited — first come gets the best view
Dry season (April-October) has the highest chance of clear weather. Rainy season often brings thick mist — beautiful but Borobudur may not be visible
