Borobudur Temple

UNESCO World Heritage — The world's largest Buddhist temple

Every time we drive guests to Borobudur Temple, we always say the same thing: get there before 7 AM, or be prepared to share the experience with a thousand other visitors. The world's largest Buddhist temple is truly magical in the early morning — mist still blankets the Magelang rice fields, and you can climb to the top stupa almost by yourself.

The drive from Jogja takes about an hour via Magelang Road, passing rice paddies that make you want to just stare out the window in peace. Once you arrive, note that parking is a full kilometer from the entrance — take the shuttle or walk. But trust us, the moment you see those 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues up close, all tiredness disappears.

Driver's tip: after exploring the temple, stop at Warung Mendut on your way out — their homemade gudeg rice is honest and affordable, unlike the tourist-priced stalls inside the complex.

From central Jogja, head north on Magelang Road. After passing Muntilan (look for the big market on the right), turn left following signs to Borobudur. About 40 km total — 1 hour in the morning, potentially 1.5 hours if you leave after 8 AM due to truck traffic around Muntilan.

Adhyasatya drivers know the alternative route through Salam when the main road is congested. Fuel and parking are included — you just sit back and enjoy.

Travel Tips

Leave Jogja at 05:00 to arrive at Borobudur before 06:30 — the temple is still quiet and morning light makes the reliefs incredibly dramatic in photos

Parking is 1 km from the entrance (IDR 10,000 car). Free shuttles are available, but walking through the garden is scenic and only 15 minutes

After 10 AM the stones get hot and sandals become uncomfortable — wear closed shoes and bring at least 1 liter of water per person

Don't head back immediately — stop at Warung Mendut (3 km towards Jogja) for homemade gudeg rice by local women, big portions for only IDR 15,000-20,000
