The 2010 eruption changed everything here. The Sisa Hartaku Museum preserves homes buried in volcanic ash — melted motorcycles, wall clocks frozen at the moment of eruption. It is emotionally heavy, but important for understanding why Jogja people deeply respect Merapi. Here, the volcano is not just geology — it is a neighbor.

How to Get There
From Jogja head north on Kaliurang Road — straight initially but gets winding and steep higher up. About 25 km, 45 minutes in the morning (before 8 AM traffic is light), up to 1 hour if sand trucks are on the road. Your car parks at the Lava Tour base camp, then you switch to a jeep. Our drivers usually wait and have coffee at the base camp stalls.

Lava Tour prices on the base camp boards are usually IDR 450,000-600,000 per jeep (4-5 people), but on weekdays you can negotiate to IDR 350,000-400,000 — just ask politely for the 'local price'
Bring a thick jacket, not just a thin one — Kaliurang morning temperature can be 16-18°C, and on the open jeep the wind is strong
Choose the package that includes Sisa Hartaku Museum + Kaliadem Bunker — both are free within the jeep package, and the stories will give you chills
