Tugu Jogja (Jogja Monument)

Yogyakarta's Most Iconic Landmark

"You have not been to Jogja until you take a photo at the Tugu!" — so says every tourist. Tugu Jogja is more than just a monument. Built by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in 1755, it marks an imaginary axis connecting Mount Merapi in the north, the Keraton in the center, and the South Sea. Javanese cosmological philosophy, embodied in one point at a road intersection.

During the day it is unremarkable — but at night, when golden lights illuminate the monument and traffic has quieted, the atmosphere transforms completely. Night photos here are far better. Bring a tripod or ask your driver who is guarding the car to take your photo.
