Malioboro

Heart of Jogja — Shopping, Food & Culture

You have not truly been to Jogja until you have wandered Malioboro. But here is the secret: do not come at midday. It is hot, packed, and vendors are on break. Come around sunset instead — when the lights start glowing, street musicians begin to play, and the angkringan food stalls open. That is the real Malioboro.

Along this 1 km pedestrian street, you can shop for batik, Jogja t-shirts, leather crafts, and traditional Javanese hats. The first price a vendor gives you? Bargain starting at 50% — it is tradition, not an insult. And when hungry, sit on the mat at an angkringan stall, order nasi kucing (small rice wraps) and teh poci (clay pot tea). Total dinner cost: IDR 15,000. Seriously.

How to Get There

Malioboro is the city center, so it is close from anywhere. But since it is a pedestrian zone, cars cannot enter. Our drivers usually drop you off at Malioboro Mall or Ramayana, then wait at the parking area (IDR 5,000-10,000). You walk around at your pace, and when done, just WhatsApp the driver for pickup.
