Timang Beach
Wooden Gondola & Fresh Lobster in Gunungkidul
This is not a Venice gondola. Timang Beach has a wooden gondola built by fishermen — manually pulled by rope, hanging over 3-4 meter waves crashing onto the rocks below. Scary? Yes. But that is exactly why people come.
Before riding the gondola, you need to walk downhill for about 15 minutes — the path is steep, wear proper shoes, not sandals. Below, the limestone cliff views and Indian Ocean waves crashing are extraordinary. And after your fill of photos, the reward awaits back up top: fresh grilled lobster at cliff-side stalls. Prices IDR 100,000-200,000 per portion — negotiate first, it is customary.

How to Get There
From Jogja via Wonosari, about 65 km (1.5-2 hours). Main road is fine until the Timang turnoff — after that the village road is narrow and the last 2 km can be rocky. Cars park at the hilltop (IDR 10,000), then walk downhill to the cliff about 15 minutes. Wear shoes, not sandals — the path gets slippery after rain.
Recommended Vehicles
- Xpander (high ground clearance)
- Innova (comfortable + reliable)
Travel Tips
Wear closed shoes, not sandals — the 15-minute descent is dirt and rocks. After rain, it is slippery
Lobster IDR 100,000-200,000/portion depending on size — always ask the price before ordering, and do not hesitate to negotiate. Best lobster season is April-September
Gondola IDR 100,000 per person — ride in the morning when waves are calmer. If afraid of heights, photos from the cliff alone are already spectacular
