Parangkusumo Sand Dunes

Mini Desert & Sandboarding on the South Coast

Sand dunes in Jogja? Not a hallucination. Parangkusumo Sand Dunes is a rare natural phenomenon — volcanic sand from Merapi carried by wind to the south coast, forming a mini desert landscape. The only one in Southeast Asia!

And yes, you can go sandboarding here (IDR 25,000 board rental). Best in late afternoon when the sun is low — sand is not too hot and the light is dramatic for photos. Near Parangtritis, so combine it with sunset at the beach.
